「A good essay is not one that uses big words, but one that uses the right words.」
—— 改寫自 Mark Twain,但好適合用嚟講 DSE Writing
識字多同識用字,中間差好遠。你可能背咗 3,000 個生字,但如果你寫出嚟嘅係 very good result、very bad situation、make a big impact,考評局嘅評卷員一睇就知你嘅 Language 停留喺 Level 4 嘅上限。HKEAA Paper 2 嘅 marking descriptors 寫得好白:Level 5 要求「a wide range of vocabulary used with precision」——呢個 precision,講嘅就係 collocation。
|---|---|---|---|
| very good | excellent / superb | very bad | dreadful / appalling |
| very big | enormous / vast | very small | minute / negligible |
| very important | crucial / pivotal | very interesting | fascinating / compelling |
| very happy | elated / thrilled | very sad | devastated / disheartened |
| very angry | furious / outraged | very tired | exhausted / fatigued |
| very hungry | ravenous / famished | very cold | freezing / frigid |
| very hot | scorching / sweltering | very fast | rapid / swift |
| very difficult | formidable / arduous | very easy | effortless / straightforward |
| very serious | grave / severe | very poor | destitute / impoverished |
| very worried | anxious / apprehensive | very surprised | astonished / bewildered |
將 `very good` 換成 `superb` 係好嘅升級。但如果你每一句都用呢類詞——`The superb initiative yielded formidable results due to pivotal reforms`——成段會變得好假、好用力。評卷員唔係計你用咗幾多高級字,而係睇你揀字嘅 judgment。一段 6 句之中,有 2 句用到精準 collocation 就足夠顯示你嘅 range。
Adjective + Noun 搭配 50 組
Adjective + noun 係 DSE 寫作入面密度最高嘅 collocation 類型。呢啲搭配嘅重點係:你揀嘅 adjective 唔止要意思啱,仲要同嗰個 noun「夾」。Strong tea 冇問題,powerful tea 就好奇怪——雖然 strong 同 powerful 喺字典入面係近義詞。
以下 50 組按 DSE Paper 2 最常見嘅 5 個主題分組,每個主題 10 組。
環境 / 可持續發展
carbon footprint、renewable resources、adverse effects、irreversible damage、pressing issue、alarming rate、endangered species、sustainable development、ecological balance、drastic measures
科技 / 媒體
cutting-edge technology、artificial intelligence、digital literacy、virtual reality、social media platform、groundbreaking research、widespread adoption、ethical implications、invasive technology、rapid advancement
教育 / 青年
holistic education、academic performance、peer pressure、extracurricular activities、steep learning curve、promising prospects、invaluable experience、diverse perspectives、overwhelming workload、fierce competition
社會 / 公民
vulnerable communities、social cohesion、racial discrimination、fundamental rights、widening gap、urban renewal、civic responsibility、growing awareness、heated debate、mounting pressure
健康 / 生活
sedentary lifestyle、chronic illness、mental wellbeing、balanced diet、physical endurance、acute shortage、preventive measures、underlying cause、debilitating condition、detrimental impact
你唔需要 50 組全部入晒長期記憶。每個主題揀 3 組你最自然記得嘅——考試嗰日能夠喺一篇文入面用到 4-5 個靚嘅 adjective + noun collocations,Language 分已經好明顯向 5 推。HKEAA Examiners' Report 提過:「Even a few well-chosen collocations can raise the overall impression of lexical competence.」
Verb + Noun 搭配 50 組
動詞同名詞嘅搭配係作文入面最容易出錯嘅地方。好多同學嘅問題係永遠用 do、make、have、get 呢幾個萬能動詞——do exercise、make a plan、have an impact。呢啲唔係錯,但係 default、無 personality。以下嘅升級版會令你嘅句子 alive 好多。
| Level 4 寫法 | Level 5 寫法 | Level 4 寫法 | Level 5 寫法 |
|---|---|---|---|
| make progress | forge progress | have influence | exert influence |
| get attention | garner attention | make a decision | reach a decision |
| do research | conduct research | give a speech | deliver a speech |
| start a debate | spark a debate | keep order | maintain order |
| break a rule | violate a rule | catch interest | pique interest |
| make a claim | lodge a claim | have a meeting | convene a meeting |
| get knowledge | acquire knowledge | say sorry | extend an apology |
| cause damage | inflict damage | reduce risks | mitigate risks |
| meet needs | cater to needs | face problems | confront challenges |
| give praise | bestow praise | use resources | harness resources |
呢度仲有 30 組你可以直接 plug in 落任何議論文嘅 verb + noun collocations:
pose a threat、bridge the gap、foster innovation、yield results、embrace diversity、tackle inequality、curb emissions、bear responsibility、reap benefits、lay the foundation、raise awareness、shift the focus、undermine credibility、bolster confidence、address concerns、uphold standards、defy expectations、voice opinions、fulfil potential、cultivate resilience、shape perceptions、broaden horizons、ignite passion、shoulder the burden、navigate challenges、seize opportunities、strike a balance、draw criticism、weather the storm、cement one's reputation
Adverb + Adjective
acutely aware、firmly convinced、gravely mistaken、blissfully ignorant、fiercely competitive、thinly veiled、grossly underestimated、marginally better、cautiously optimistic、undeniably true、conspicuously absent、chronically underfunded、remarkably resilient、demonstrably effective、largely overlooked、diametrically opposed、tacitly accepted、inherently risky、abundantly clear、sorely needed、loosely defined、uniquely positioned、stubbornly persistent、hopelessly outdated、nominally independent、deeply rooted、hotly contested、painstakingly researched、emphatically denied、patently obvious
呢幾個係 DSE 考生作文入面最常見嘅 collocation error——`strongly agree`(應該係 `firmly / wholeheartedly agree`)、`heavy traffic`(啱)但 `heavy work`(應該係 `heavy workload`)、`do a mistake`(應該係 `make a mistake`)。呢類錯誤唔會令你跌到 Level 3,但會阻止你上 Level 5。
點喺作文入面用?一個段落示範
空講唔如直接睇。以下用 DSE 2022 Paper 2 Q7 嘅 topic(你認為科技令人與人之間更加疏離定更加親密?)做示範,寫一段用咗 collocations 嘅 body paragraph:
The increasingly prevalent use of social media has sparked a heated debate about whether it fosters genuine connection or merely creates a thinly veiled illusion of intimacy. Critics are deeply concerned that young people who rely on digital platforms may sacrifice face-to-face interaction, leading to a widening gap between online personas and real-life relationships. However, it would be grossly unfair to dismiss technology altogether — for many vulnerable communities, messaging apps have proven to be a crucial lifeline.
留意上面嗰段只有 4 句,但用咗 8 組 collocations(粗體標示)。
廣東話入面我哋講「開會」,直譯就係 open a meeting——但英文要講 hold a meeting 或者 convene a meeting。
